Four years ago, a cult classic blew up on the big screen. Guillermo Del Toro brought Hellboy to life in all his giant, red, sarcastic glory and fans haven’t been able to get enough since. This summer, Del Toro does it a second time with the release of Hellboy II: The Golden Army.
In preparation for this blockbuster event, Third Planet wants to give you the opportunity to catch up on the series that started it all!
For those of you new to the phenomenon, let’s give you some background. Hellboy is a creation of Mike Mignola, making his demonic debut in 1993. Since then, Hellboy has been part of a number of mini-series as well as the center of the Hellboy series with a spin-off, BPRD.
His story starts in 1944 when the Nazi-commissioned Grigori Rasputin summons him to our realm in order to help sway WWII. He is found and raised by Trevor Bruttenholm of the government’s top secret Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD) and, in 1952, is given honorary human status.
In order to make up for his demon heritage and to protect those he has grown close to, Hellboy becomes part of the BPRD field team as a weapon against the supernatural powers that would overtake this world. He and his partners, Liz Sherman and Abraham Sapien travel the globe fighting monsters we only thought were story or myth but he does it with style, pizzazz and his ever present sense of humor.
